#GivingTuesday2018

The holiday season is almost upon us. Thanksgiving is tomorrow; ready to set the tone for the festivities to follow in the coming months. Black Friday and Cyber Monday will allow many to over indulge on spending and buying lavish gifts. One newer tradition is starting to grab hold, and that is Giving Tuesday, which involves spending for a cause.

Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 when two organizations, 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, came together and decided that their ought to be a day set aside to celebrate the generosity of giving. So, they gathered some thought leaders in the areas of social media, philanthropy, and grassroots. This group of founding partners includes:

  • United Nations Foundation
  • Cisco
  • Mashable
  • Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA)
  • Sony
  • Aldo
  • Groupon
  • UNICEF
  • Google Skype
  • Microsoft
  • Unilever

The first ever announcement made about this day of giving was made possible by founding member, Mashable, and was heavily covered by media stations like Washington Post, Huffington Post, ABC News, Deseret News, and the White House official blog. From 2012 on, Giving Tuesday has gained enormous popularity and has been organized and celebrated each year since.
