Katy Perry Opens up About Mental Health and Suicide

In a recent interview on Viceland, Katy Perry (a.k.a. Kathryn Hudson) sat down with Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh for a frank and honest therapy session. Hudson opens up about the challenges of being authentic in a world where she is famous for portraying her famous alter ego, “Katy Perry.” She talks about the recent hype around her choice to cut her hair, childhood, relationships, her mental health, and even past thoughts about suicide.

“It’s hard because I’m ashamed. Because of course, Katy Perry’s so strong. I feel ashamed that I would have those thoughts, feel that low and depressed,” she admitted, while discussing her song By the Grace of God, on her Prism album.

The song dives into her experience with depression following the end of her marriage to Russell Brand. Broken hearted, she wrote the song to express her intense mental pain and ultimately her choice to live on to pick herself “up off the bathroom floor,” as her song goes.
