Do you ever find yourself questioning your own worth, and not feeling good enough? You’re not alone in that. In fact, one of my personal limiting beliefs is that I am not good enough. That belief is typically the root cause of a lot of my mental distress. When things go wrong, I often point blame on myself, even if I had no control over the situation. When I am having a bad day, I often find the negative in things around me, and start believing that I am not worthy of having a good life. Although I know deep down that this belief is not true, it can be hard to convince myself otherwise in the moment. I didn’t realize that I struggled with this limiting belief until I started therapy and discovered that this belief has been with me for a long time and has woven itself into how I show up in the world.
I am working hard to combat this belief through actively working to change it. However, I still have my days, and those thoughts and feelings do still take over. I’m here to remind you that it’s normal to feel that way. It’s normal to have a bad day, to be in a bad mood for seemingly no reason, and it’s okay to give yourself time and space to feel those things. Personally, I need to let myself feel those feelings sometimes, so that I can be curious and ask myself, why am I feeling this way in this moment? What is happening around me that is causing this limiting belief to come to the forefront?
Often, this feeling comes up when I am procrastinating something, haven’t slept well in a few days, or haven’t given myself any alone time. These are 3 situations in which I have recognized that this feeling will inevitably come up. So, it’s important for that I practice self-care in these moments. For me, self-care looks like getting proper sleep, managing my time more effectively, and spending quality time alone.
Practicing self-compassion has helped me alleviate negative thoughts and beliefs when they arise. This means pausing when I recognize myself thinking negatively, looking in the mirror, and reminding myself that I am only human. Life requires bad days, hard situations, and mistakes. These are the only ways that we can truly learn and grow into our highest selves.
Next time you catch yourself thinking something negative, try pausing and reminding yourself that you are human, going through life in the best way that you can, and are open to learning and growing. These practices may seem too simple to be effective. However, if you truly take the time to incorporate them into your daily routine, you will notice changes in your mindset over time.
Take some time today to recognize what your limiting beliefs are and when they come up. Identity situations, practicing self-compassion, and creating a plan to combat these thoughts. Learning about yourself is so valuable to your mental health and makes it easier to be more compassionate towards yourself.
You are good enough. You are worthy. You deserve a beautiful life.
