Mission:
The mission of RADIUS is to empower youth and families to reach their full potential through community engagement and trauma-informed education, social and behavioral health services.

Funded Program Description:
The evidence-based program, RADIUS, provides comprehensive services to youth ages 12-18 who are justice-involved and need treatment for mental health and/or substance use disorders. Previously, this population of youth were sent out of state to get help. As the only local solution in Douglas County, Nebraska, RADIUS ensures that youth with complex needs can stay close to their families for their effective treatment and recovery. Services include residential care, year-round school, in-home services, and outpatient treatment in partnership with Charles Drew Health Center.

With the generous support of The Kim Foundation, RADIUS provides youth with trauma-informed residential services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The 24-bed residential campus features expansive spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows for abundant natural light, single bedrooms, and behavioral health-grade finishes to reduce the risk of self-harm.

Youth receiving residential care follow a daily therapeutic schedule and participate in mindfulness activities in the dedicated wellness room. In addition, youth practice healthy self-regulation on the campus’ outdoor walking trail, fitness center, and gymnasium.

Youth Coaches maintain a low ratio of one coach for every four youths, guiding each young person through their daily routine. Staff are trained in Trauma Affect Regulation: Guide for Education & Therapy (TARGET) to create tailored solutions for youth navigating the challenges of stress cycles, and Restorative Practices to build community, reduce misbehavior, and promote accountability.

With evidence-based practices woven throughout each of the services that RADIUS provides, positive effects are promoted, including stress reduction, enhanced social competence, increased pro-social behaviors, academic success, and improved mental health outcomes for generations to come.

Successes of Program or Inspirational Stories:
Since its opening in July 2023, RADIUS has admitted 40 youth, providing them with a safe, therapeutic environment close to their families. Through RADIUS’ partnership with The Kim Foundation, Omaha youth are receiving comprehensive behavioral health services crucial to their healing journey.
