Grant Spotlight: Catholic Charities of Omaha

Organization Name: Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Omaha, Inc.

Mission: As a Christ-centered organization, and with mercy as the foundation of the Church, we translate the Gospel of Jesus Christ into action and seek to transform the world by sharing God’s mercy and compassionate love with all people.

Funded Program Description: Catholic Charities School Mental Health Program (SMHP) pairs 8,000+ students, their families, teachers, and administrators at 19 schools with immediate, professional mental health resources. Our program – headquartered at the St. Teresa of Calcutta Campus in Omaha – serves urban and rural schools helping youth of all ages relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety, enhance areas of social competency, and improve behavioral and emotional functioning. Services are provided during the school day; the moment youth need them.

In addition to our work in schools, we’re fierce advocates for the heroic teachers shaping our community’s future leaders. In collaboration with the Omaha Archdiocese, this fall we’re hosting a Mental Health Symposium. This first-of-its-kind event held at Omaha’s CHI Center is expected to welcome 900 educators to a day of learning and growth. We’ll hold a second event in Norfolk to reach rural educators.

Successes of Program or Inspirational Stories: This program changes lives.

While many children enter kindergarten full of smiles and giggles, ready to begin the adventure of elementary school, Sarah* didn’t. A selective mute, Sarah spent her days in the classroom alone, unable to connect with her classmates.

Her teacher immediately noticed Sarah was struggling and reached out to Catholic Charities. Our therapists dove into action. Because Sarah wouldn’t speak, our therapist used puppets to communicate. Several times a week, Sarah and her therapist would work to connect using the colorful characters. After 27 sessions, Sarah made a breakthrough – she spoke. Her parents and teacher were overjoyed. We were, too. Selective mutism is a rare condition that begins in childhood, but if left untreated it can persist into adulthood.

Today, Sarah’s life looks little like it did several months ago. A few small words have turned into full sentences. Once described as shy, her new friends consider her a chatterbox. Thanks to the steadfast support of The Kim Foundation, Catholic Charities provided the support – and hope – Sarah and her family needed. And because of that, her future is forever changed.

Other Comments: We’re grateful for the legacy of support of The Kim Foundation whose funding leadership has helped grow our program from serving a few dozen students to an 11-person staff serving 8,000+ students.
