Benefits of Float Therapy

Water can have a soothing effect on our bodies both mentally and physically. From listening to calm waters of the lake or stream, to the rhythmic waves of the ocean, or drawing a warm bath at the end of a long day to ease sore muscles, or even swimming a few laps at the pool. Water is powerful. Flotation therapy channels this power and combines it with deeply relaxing properties of magnesium saturated water (aka Epsom salt) which is kept at body temperature and keeps you effortlessly buoyant so you don’t have to worry about staying afloat.

Float therapy is simply floating in a personal float pod, depriving the senses of stimuli. You may leave the pod lid opened or closed and can turn the meditative music and lights on or off, based on your personal preference. Float sessions usually last for 60 or 90 minutes. Floating is designed to remove excess stimuli which helps the body reach a restorative state. With little to feel, hear, touch, taste, or smell, you feel like you are wrapped in a cocoon of warmth which puts you in a meditative state of deep mental and physical peace. Deep relaxation and expanded awareness help healing on many levels. Some benefits of float therapy are that it:

  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Improves sleep
  • Alleviates stress
  • Revitalizes the body and mind
  • Decreases production of cortisol (stress hormone) and adrenaline
  • Increases production of endorphins
  • Relieves pain
  • Expands awareness and creativity
  • Promotes calmness and relaxation
  • Improves athletic performance, helps prevent sports injuries, and speeds up the healing process
  • Reduces blood pressure and heart rate
  • Stimulates left/right brain synchronization
  • Improves circulation and immune system
  • Boosts mood

As you can see, there are several benefits to floating. There are many float spas around the Omaha area as well as in many other cities. Many float therapy businesses offer free floats to first responders as a thank for all that they do in our communities and to give them the many benefits floating has to offer. You may experience some restlessness during your first float until your body and mind settle into the sensory deprivation. The more often you float, the better off your body and mind will be.
