Fears, Frights, and Phobias
Fear is an interesting emotion. With Halloween coming in just a few weeks, some of us will get to experience our terrors all around us. Whether it be a fake spider at our desk, eerie skulls lying about, or children and adults parading around in scary costumes, fear can come in many forms. Some fear can be healthy and even sought out by thrill seekers.
World Mental Health Day
October 10th marks World Mental Health Day each year. It was first celebrated in 1992 by the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health which makes it the 25th anniversary of the event.
What is CTE?
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, is a neurodegenerative brain disease that has Alzheimer’s-like symptoms, including memory loss, confusion, aggression, rage, and sometimes suicidal behavior. It is believed to result from repeated head trauma, which results in a buildup of the abnormal protein called tau that clumps in the brain.
Learning From Our Neighbors
Last week I had the opportunity to attend the first ever Kansas/Missouri Behavioral Health Coalitions Conference. Each year the states have done one individually, but they realized together, they are stronger and joined forces. It was amazing to see what they were able to pull off as they brought at least 1,200 people together from both states who share a passion for serving the behavioral health communities in their areas.
Suicide Awareness Month
September was a busy month for everyone in the suicide awareness and prevention field. This year, National Suicide Prevention Week (NSPW) took place September 10th through the 16th (1). Since 1975, NSPW has an been annual week-long campaign in the United States to inform and engage health professionals and the general public about suicide prevention and warning signs of suicide.
A Simple Conversation
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. During this time, many organizations, The Kim Foundation included, encourage all to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness of warning signs, and connect those in need to resources. Something you can do at any moment of the year is talk with someone you care about.
Fall Presentations & Resource Booths
This time of year is a busy one for The Kim Foundation! With the start of school comes the start of presentations to many students and school staff throughout the city. Our presentations are catered to each school’s needs and can cover mental health, suicide prevention or a combination of both. In August, we were asked to present to the faculty of Creighton Prep. Shortly after, we traveled to DeWitt, NE and also presented to the faculty of the Tri County Schools.
Celebrities Talk Suicide Prevention at VMA’s
Last Sunday evening, people from around the world tuned in the MTV Video Music Awards. As usual the night was packed full of music performances, outrageous outfits, and tons of celebrities. However, this year’s ceremony shed some light on a topic that is not often brought to the mainstage . . . suicide.
Fall Happenings
For the foundation, back to school season has meant numerous suicide prevention and mental health awareness trainings spanning from Greeley to right here in Omaha. We are happy to provide these trainings free of charge to school districts, organizations, church groups, and companies. We train the staff, parents, and students, and have had resounding success so far.
