Why People-First Language Matters
As I was pondering what to write about this month, I was struck by the number of cringe worthy moments I was experiencing while reading a variety of media outlets or hearing presentations by experts and providers in the mental health field. Too often I am reading or hearing, “mentally ill person,” or “bipolar individual,” or “suicidal person.” Why does this matter? Well because, above all else, this person is still that, a person.
New Website Improving Mental Health Access in Omaha Area Launches
Approximately one in five adults experience mental illness in a given year, and approximately 20 percent of youth ages 13 to 18 live with a mental health condition. Project Harmony, in partnership with The Kim Foundation, Project Everlast, and Region 6 Behavioral Health, have joined efforts to improve access to mental health resources and treatment for children and families in our community through one dedicated website, NebraskaMentalHealth.com.
Stress in School-Age Children
School related stress has become a problem for children nationwide. Nearly one in three teenagers told the American Psychological Association that, “Stress drove them to sadness or depression and their single biggest source of stress was school.”
“Be 1 In A Million”
The National Council for Behavioral Health announced a new campaign in January called, “Be 1 In a Million.” The campaign is aimed to train one million people in Mental Health First Aid. This would double the current estimated 500,000 people trained in the United States.
Influential Psychiatrist Dr. Robert Spitzer Dies at 83
Dr. Robert Spitzer died of heart complications on Friday, December 25th at age 83. Spitzer was coined as the ‘Most Influential Pyschiatrist’

#RealTalkSuicide: A Community Conversation About Suicide Prevention
According to the American Association of Suicidology, there is a suicide in the United States every 12.8 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 15-24 years old, and it is the 10th leading cause of death overall (AAS.org). While other causes of death have decreased due to advances in medicine and technology, suicide sadly has not.

The Price of Perfection: The Silicon Valley Suicides
The Atlantic published an article by Hanna Rosin entitled “The Silicon Valley Suicides: Why are so many kids with bright futures killing themselves in Palo Alto?” Rosin paints a picture of a place of affluence, success, and high expectations. However, at Gunn High School in Palo Alto, California, the 10 year suicide rate is four to five times the national average.
