Suicide Prevention: A Month of Awareness, a Year-Round Commitment

The mission of The Kim Foundation is to save lives. Rooted in hope, compassion, and collaboration, we work to prevent suicide and support those impacted, by educating and cultivating a community where mental wellness thrives. Each September, Suicide Prevention Month gives us an opportunity to bring greater attention to this commitment while involving the community.

This year, we’re inviting all to get involved in two creative ways.

Chalk It Up for Brighter Tomorrows

From September 6–12, Chalk It Up for Brighter Tomorrows will once again fill sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and other spaces across the Omaha metro with messages of hope and encouragement. Gather your family, friends, coworkers, classmates, or neighbors, grab some chalk, and leave a message that someone may see at exactly the moment they need it.

Participants are also encouraged to share photos of their creations for a chance to be featured by TKF. It’s simple, colorful and fun—but the message behind it is important: connection matters, and hope can be shared anywhere.

Suicide Prevention Sticker Design Contest

We also want young people to help us spread hope! Our Suicide Prevention Sticker Design Contest invites area middle and high school students to use their creativity to develop an original design centered around suicide prevention and positive messages of hope, perseverance, self-love, and self-worth. Selected artwork has the opportunity to become something much bigger than a contest entry—helping us share youth-created messages with teens throughout our community.

Resources When You Need Them

Suicide prevention starts with knowing what to look for, what to say, and where to turn for help. Our website includes an extensive collection of information and resources, including suicide warning signs, guidance for helping someone who may be struggling, crisis resources, and additional local and national sources of support.

Whether you are concerned about someone you love, want to become better prepared to help, or simply want to learn more, we encourage you to explore these resources—and share them with others.

Our Work Continues All Year

While September shines an important spotlight on suicide prevention, this work doesn’t begin or end with Suicide Prevention Month.

Throughout the year, The Kim Foundation provides free suicide prevention and general mental health trainings, brings resources into the community through outreach events and awareness campaigns, partners with schools and organizations, and helps connect people with information and support. Through our Brighter Tomorrows programs and the Metro Area LOSS Team, our team works every day to educate, connect, support, and create more opportunities for hope.

This September, we hope you’ll join us—whether you chalk a hopeful message, encourage a student to enter the sticker contest, share a resource, check in on someone you care about, or simply learn a little more about how to help.

Suicide prevention is something all of us can be part of. And the opportunity to make a difference lasts far beyond September.
